Church Archivists’ Itinerary Conference in Budapest


The Association of Hungarian Church Archivists (MELTE) held its annual itinerary conference at D50 Cultural Centre and Hotel between 20 and 22 June. On the Monday ordinary meeting, we decided on the change of the association’s name. Henceforth, the name of our association: Association of Hungarian Church Archivists. On the general meeting for election of officials, Dénesi Tamás, the Director of the Archabbey’s Archives was elected to serve as a member of the Association’s executive committee.

“The Next Link in the Chain”


The Committee of National Remembrance held a conference entitled “The Next Ling in the Change” in Budapest on 05 June 2022. Its theme focussed on the Sovietization of the appropriation of economic power, nationalization, and Hungarian economy between 1945 and 1949. The presentation of Boros Zoltán, archivist was entitled: The Steps of the Secularization of the Property of the Benedictine Order between 1945 and 1950.

Prize-Winners of a History Competition in the Archives


The solemn announcement of results of the 21st Cultura Nostra History Competition organized by the Pannonhalma Archabbey, and the Rákóczi Association took place on 2 June. The best place-winning secondary-school pupils and the teachers training them could attend scholarly lectures in the Archabbey, then they were showed round in the church, cloister and library of the millennial monastery. The programme was concluded with the presentation of valuable items of the Archives.

Conference of Church History in Veszprém


In the Veszprém Archiepiscopal College, on 4 May 2022, a conference was organized on the history of the diocese between 1777 and 1850. The programme was a part of the series of conferences on diocesan history that has become traditional by this time. Dénesi Tamás gave a talk on Dissolution and Reorganization: Benedictine Institutions in the Diocese.

New access to e-research!


The collection of the digitalised registers of births, marriages and deaths in the Territorial Abbey of Pannonhalma has been moved to "Matricula", the shared ecclesiastic archival webpage. New researchers can register on the webpage of matricula.hu. After registration and entry, it is in the “Subscription” ("Előfizetés") menu item where our service can be ordered by putting it into the cart. Accesses will be activated as before on receipt of the bank transfer, and subscribers will get their bills in e-mail. Also, in case of subscription-renewal, you are required to register on matricula.hu. The automation of the registration-process and the construction of the bankcard-payment are both in progress.

Collectanea Sancti Martini IX has been published


The Bulletin of the Collections of the Archabbey of Pannonhalma has been published. Half of the papers in Collectanea Sancti Martini IX show the readers around the Middle Ages. This volume also reveals, whether Maria Theresa visited Pannonhalma, how Kühár Flóris was through his imprisonment during the Hungarian Soviet Republic, and we are given a glimpse into the start of beer-brewing in Pannonhalma.

The restoration of an 11-meter-long charter


Supported by APELSO Trust Zrt, we can have a charter written in 1568 repaired in spring. The contract about this was signed by Archabbot Hortobágyi T. Cirill and dr. Antall György, a member of the board of directors of APELSO Trust Zrt on 19 January 2022. The charter will be repaired by Ars Alba Restaurátor Bt, Szentendre.

The Bishop of Temesvár (Timișoara) visited the Archives


On the solemnity of Saint Martin, Pál József Csaba, the Bishop of Temesvár (Timișoara) was our guest. He presided the liturgy in the Basilica, he met the pupils of the secondary boarding school, and he was interested in the Library and the Museum, too.

Folk musicians visited Pannonhalma


On 4 November, the teachers and students of the Folk Music Department, Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Pázmány Péter Catholic University visited the Archabbey. All of them were folk musicians. In the Archives, the guests could see documents of the history of liturgy and music from the 15th-18th centuries besides mediaeval charters.

The 23rd and 9th Archival Day of Győr and the Little Plain in NW Hungary, respectively


On 19 October, during the professional day organised in the Baross-street lecture-hall of the County Library of Győr, the member of our Archives, Boros Zoltán delivered a lecture entitled A Benedictine estate on the confines of the city of Győr: Estate-management and modernization at the beginning of the 20th century.
